How Crack Sealing Extends the Life of Your Asphalt Pavement

From sidewalks and driveways to parking lots and patios, every pavement experiences the natural wear and tear that comes with aging. Ground movement, extreme weather conditions, and invasive tree roots are additional leading causes of pavement cracking.

When cracks start to spread, it’s time to fill them. Crack filling is a type of maintenance that should be performed annually throughout the life of your asphalt pavement to ensure its longevity and functionality. Crack filling also helps you avoid more costly repairs and replacements down the road.

Benefits of Asphalt Crack Filling & Repair

Here are some of the top benefits that asphalt crack filling maintenance and repair offers:

Common Types of Asphalt Cracks That Require Repairs

Different types of asphalt cracks require varying repair solutions. Pave America’s team of professionals is prepared to handle various types of asphalt crack repair in areas such as parking lots

We’re able to provide asphalt crack repair services for:

longitudinal crack in the middle of the road

Longitudinal Cracking

Also known as linear cracking, longitudinal cracks are typically found parallel to joints. Longitudinal cracks are commonly the result of improper pavement installation, shrinking of the surface, and erratic fluctuations in temperatures.

transverse crack on road

Transverse Cracking

Transverse cracking occurs in the opposite fashion of longitudinal cracking. Transverse cracks emerge perpendicular to the asphalt’s joints due to asphalt shrinkage or poor joint installation.

reflective cracking in parking lot

Reflective Cracks

Reflective cracking occurs when the underlying pavement structure reflects upward through the surface. These types of cracks are common among resurfacing projects.

alligator cracking on asphalt

Alligator Cracking

Fatigue cracking is known for its resemblance to reptile scales, garnering its other label of alligator cracking. Fatigue cracks are often related to issues below the pavement surface, such as poor drainage. Fatigue cracking can also happen as a result of poor installation techniques or excessive loading.

slippage cracking in asphalt

Slippage Cracking

Slippage cracking resembles the shape of a semicircle tear and surrounding ripple-like formations. Slippage cracks manifest primarily due to a lack of adhesion between the pavement surface and subsurface layers, creating the potential need for full-depth reclamation. Slippage cracks can also emerge due to a large amount of sand present in the pavement mix.

edge cracks on the edge of an asphalt road

Edge Cracking

Edge cracks follow a linear shape and emerge near the pavement’s outer edges. Instances of edge cracking result from excessive loading, drainage issues, or thick vegetation near the pavement’s perimeter.

Block Cracking

Block cracking appears in a rectangular shape and affects the asphalt’s top layer. Block cracking is commonly caused by a lack of moisture in the pavement’s mix or large fluctuations in temperature.

Our Crack Filling Process

Our crack filling process involves these three steps:

Prepare the Surface

We use a wire brush, a broom, or compressed air to remove any debris from the cracks for proper adhesion.
pouring crack filling material

Apply the Material

Hot pour crack filler is applied to the cracks. This material is heated to a high temperature to ensure proper flow and adhesion to the crack walls.

Finish & Cure

We smooth the crack filler with a squeegee to ensure it’s even with the surrounding pavement. The crack filler is then left to cure to ensure it has hardened properly and will provide a long-lasting seal.

Understanding the Long-Term Effects of Cracks in Asphalt

While asphalt cracks are common, it’s crucial to not take them lightly. Once cracking in the asphalt occurs, the early failure of the pavement becomes more likely. Cracking creates the opportunity for water infiltration deep within the asphalt’s subsurface.

Deterioration follows as a result of chemical reactions involving water and asphalt’s means to hold the pavement aggregate together—the asphalt binder. Over time, the subsurface layers can fail and lead to potholes. Issues can swell in colder climates due to the freezing of water inside the asphalt, which expands and pushes the surface of the asphalt. Despite location or size, cracks are a prerequisite for expensive damage.
